Our fingernails are manufactured from a protein referred to as keratin, and there's extra to them than meets the eye. Each of our nails is made up of six parts. The nail fold is the ridge of skin across the nail. The part we will see and normally name a fingernail (or toenail) known as the nail plate. Beneath the nail plate is the nail mattress, which nourishes the nail. That half-moon-formed space at the base of your nail is called the lunula, and it's a part of the nail matrix. The nail matrix is at the base of every nail, although you can't see it -- it is below the cuticle, a fold of skin made from useless cells that retains micro organism from getting in.
